Top Attractions in Munich

  • Marienplatz: In the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town) is one of the busiest spots in Munich, Marienplatz. Here you’ll find the famous Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall of Munich), where at 11am every day you can watch 32 life-size, clockwork figures reenact historical events in time to the chimes of the hall’s signature clock, the Glockenspiel.
  • Frauenkirche: Munich’s largest church, the Frauenkirche, has been a symbol of Bavaria since its construction was finished in 1488. The city’s rigid laws prohibiting any building to exceed the church’s height of 99 metres, have made the Frauenkirche one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city. The top of the church’s towers offer a breathtaking view of Munich, with the Alps in the distance.
  • Dachau Concentration Camp: Opened by Heinrich Himmler in 1933, Dachau Concentration Camp was the first of such camps opened in Germany. Originally intended to hold political prisoners only, the camp soon extended to imprison any person or persons considered ‘undesirable’ to the Nazi regime. Today the original baths, barracks, and courtyards used by the prisoners remain, along with a crematorium where so many faced their end. There are numerous exhibitions and memorials you can view, independently or as part of a guided tour, to shed some light on one of the darkest chapters of human history.

  • Viktualienmarkt: A few steps from Marienplatz is the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s historic, daily outdoor market. The market as it is today dates back to 1807 when King Maximilian I moved it to its current location. Here you will find fresh food, flowers, and other artisan goods every Monday to Saturday.

  • Residence Palace of Munich: The former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchy, the Munich Residenz, is still standing strong today. Its opulent halls, historic gardens, and beautiful courtyards have remained untouched by time, with the Residence’s own museum of interior design keeping the palace’s original furniture, paintings, tapestries, and other treasures safe for all to see.

  • The English Garden: The Englischer Garten, created in 1789, is one of the largest urban parks in the world, even bigger than Central Park! Visitors can take in the park’s lush scenery by taking a stroll, renting a paddle-boat, or by visiting one of the park’s wonderful beer gardens!
