Nearby Attractions

The Porto Platanias Village Apartments are close to a number of attractions in Chania, including:

  • Chania Old Town
  • Next to Chania’s iconic Venetian harbour is the city’s beautiful Old Town. While the original walls that once acted as a border for the town were destroyed in World War II, there are still plenty of historical treasures left in the town that survived the war relatively unscathed.

The central part of the Old Town is Kasteli. Here you will find Eleftherios Venizelos Square (aka. Syntrivani), the main tourist centre in this part of Chania. The square was named to commemorate Venizelo, a twentieth century leader of the Greek national liberation movement who spent an incredible 16 years in office as Prime Minister of Greece between 1910 and 1933!

  • Archaeological Museum of Chania
  • Located in the former Venetian Monastery of Saint Francis, the Archaeological Museum of Chania is one of the top tourist attractions in Crete! The monastery, which is in itself an important monument of the city, was converted into a museum in 1962.

The museum houses a variety of ancient Roman, Greek, and Minoan artifacts. This collection includes coins from different eras, jewelry, vases, mosaics and marble sculptures, along with every day clay tablets still bearing their original inscriptions. A trip to the Archaeological Museum of Chania is encouraged for anyone interested in local history and culture!

  • Nautical Museum of Crete
  • Established in 1973, the Nautical Museum of Crete was built to honour and share the great maritime history of the island. The museum has a vast collection of model ships, nautical instruments, and other relics that range from those once used in local shipping traditions to those used during World War II.

The museum’s main collection is located at the entrance to Chania’s Firka Fortress, where one can find historical photos, paintings, a model of Chania under Venetian rule, the removed bridge of a destroyer ship, two torpedo propulsion units, and a fascinating exhibit on the German invasion of Crete.
