The humble whaling town of Biarritz was turned on its head in 1854 when Princess Eugenie, wife of the Emperor of the French, Napoleon III, decided to build a palace on the beach as a summer getaway for the royal couple. Both the palace’s glamorous design and its stunning location turned Biarritz into a chic holiday destination for Europe’s royalty.
In its time as a royal residence, the palace received esteemed visitors such as Queen Victoria and her son King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, and King Alfonso XIII and Queen Isabella of Spain. This impressive string of guests led to the Villa Eugénie being described as “The Queen of Resorts and the Resort of Kings”.
This status was to change however in 1883, when France returned to a republican constitution. As the state seized control of the palace, they decided to open it up to the public as a hotel. In the years that followed, the Hôtel du Palais would host the world’s rich and famous, from Coco Chanel to Frank Sinatra! Today, the palace’s impeccable standards are upheld by an on-site workshop, dedicated to the restoration and suites, rooms, and original furniture.
The golden sand, multi coloured vintage tents, and palace in the background of Biarritz’s Grande Plage make for the ideal French postcard, and the perfect backdrop for your stay here!
The beach in Biarritz is an important feature of the area, and an essential part of the local identity. In fact, it is said that surfing was brought to Europe in 1957 when Deborah Kerr came to the area to film The Sun Also Rises, and her husband Peter Viertel went surfing in Biarritz!
Between the nearby Museum of the Sea, the Barrière and Bellevue seaside casinos, the Hôtel du Palais, and the usual gaggle of surfers, Biarritz’s Grande Plage can often get quite crowded in the peak months of summer. To avoid getting lost in the crowd, make sure to visit the beach early in the morning, when you will have it all to yourself!
Part of the fun in visiting a new city is discovering the local cuisine for yourself, however it can often be difficult to know where to start! To help set you off on the right foot, we here at Best4Travel have compiled a list of the top rated restaurants in and around Biarritz, divided by price to cater for all budget types.
