- Resistance Museum
Opened in 1992, the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation is a museum that chronicles the French Resistance to Nazi occupation, as well as the deportation of Jewish citizens during World War II.
The former military health school was used by the SS and Gestapo leader Klaus Barbie, the ‘Butcher of Lyon’, as a base to torture resistance members, including Jean Moulin. While this may be a sobering visit, it will also give you an invaluable insight into the history of Lyon.
- Notre-Dame de Fourvière
Built between 1872 and 1884, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a beautiful symbol of Lyon. As an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the basilica offers guided tours for anyone looking to learn more about its elaborate architecture, fascinating history, and explore the basilica’s Museum of Sacred Art.
The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is often credited as having saved Lyon from the Black Death (1643). Each year on December 8, the Immaculate Conception, candles are lit throughout the city during the Festival of Lights to thank her.
- Parc de la Tête d’Or
The ‘Park of the Golden Head’ in Lyon is Europe’s largest urban park at a whopping 290 acres! Alongside four rose gardens, a number of huge greenhouses and a beautiful botanical garden, you will also find a small zoo with both local animals and an African plain, a velodrome, boules court, mini-golf course, horse riding, and a miniature train!
