Lapland

Lapland has the last remaining expanse of wilderness in northern Europe, including the coastline, forests, mountains and unspoilt rivers and in winter this becomes a wonderland of snow where you can experience the fun of snow mobiles, toboggans and sleigh rides. A holiday in Lapland is truly magical and one to treasure forever. Lapland’s capital sits on the Arctic Circle and this is also where you’ll find the One True Home of Finland’s most popular resident: Santa Claus. From the moment you arrive in the snow clad magical world of Lapland your time is filled with things that dreams are made of. Most importantly the chance to visit Santa.

For 2017, choose from 1, 2, 3 or 4 night trips to Lapland!

Will it be cold?
You will be visiting an environment where temperatures regularly fall to -15C and have been known to reach as low as -45C. However, on all our tours Sunway provide warm all-in-one thermal suit and boots on loan. With variations in Arctic weather conditions and global warming it is totally impossible to provide a guideline to temperatures you will endure on your arrival. Going on past experience early December is not as cold as late December. Snow conditions can vary from year to year and again with global warming we cannot give accurate guidelines on this. Our Thermal suits are similar to Ski Suits so it is advisable that you wear something comfortable underneath them as you are in these suits for the majority of the time spent in Lapland. We would recommend that you bring your own gloves (not woolly gloves, good thinsulate gloves) and your own hats and scarfs. Snow boots are provided for your own safety, it is advisable that these are worn at all times. Children being children will play in the snow and they will get very cold.

Will we find Santa Claus?
Santa Claus is looking forward to meeting all the children, there will be a small token gift for every child. Santa Claus is very busy at this time of year but he is waiting to hear all the children's wishes.

What is the food like?
Please remember you are travelling to a foreign country so do not expect the same food. Generally breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffet style and will cater for adults and children's tastes. We do try to ensure that all meals are similar to home wherever possible. The variety and type of food will vary from establishment to establishment.

What is the local currency?
Euro is the currency used in Finnish Lapland. There are limited banking facilities in Rovaniemi.

How safe is it?
Lapland is perfectly safe provided you follow the instructions of our arctic guides. You will appreciate that you are visiting an area where arctic conditions prevail. Provided you are sensible and accept guidance when given, no problems will arise. We do stress that parents and guardians are responsible for the supervision of their own party for the duration of the tour. At any time your guide may alter the scheduled tour content in the interest of safety.

Snowmobiles ?
Snowmobiles can only be driven by adults over 18 years with a full clean driving license. Please ensure you bring your driving license with you as you may be asked to present this. Children under 12 years will travel in a sleigh pulled behind a snowmobile. Children 12years and above may travel as a passenger behind the adult, at the local guides discretion. Snowmobiles are insured as required by Finnish law. This insurance covers medical care for injuries for the driver and the passenger arising from accidents. The amount of personal liability is max €980 per snowmobile/instance of accident. We can not accept any liability for personal injuries or material damage arising from accidents during "Winter Funtastic Games" husky dog sledding, reindeer safaris, or other excursions which do not involve snowmobiling, personal travel insurance is recommended.

Equipment ?
Our equipment consists of snowmobiles which are easy to handle and are developed for the demanding conditions of arctic climates. The safaris include thermal outfits, snowmobiling shoes, under-hoods and helmets, woollen socks and mittens. These are provided for your saftey.

Instructions and guidance?
Technical instruction is provided before all safaris, so that all participants are able to have full knowledge about manoeuvring the vehicles. Additional emphasis is placed on the special safety regulations regarding every aspect of the safaris. We provide guidance in English.

Will it be dark during our stay?
An average Lapland day will provide 4.5 hours of what is termed Gray light (generally between 10:00hrs and 14:30hrs daily Finnish time, although this will vary depending on location). Outside of these hours it will be like night time at home in Ireland but with the advantage of snow. Venues for our day visits to Lapland are accordingly lit naturally using roaring fires and Lappish outdoor candles providing an attractive setting for the events taking place. Indeed if you are particularly lucky you may see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) which appear as if a storm in the sky with white red or green lights dancing through the atmosphere.

Circumstances beyond our control?
We do not pay compensation or accept liability if our performance is affected by an event beyond our control such as adverse weather conditions. Most of the activities included in our Lapland program depend for their successful accomplishment on adequate snow conditions both prior to and during operation.

Why Lapland Is The Perfect Winter Wonderland For Your Holiday ?
Lapland which is in Finland is the largest and most northern region in the country. It is neighboring to the area of Northern Ostrobothnia which is located in the south.

Whats the Weather Like ?
Lapland is a well-known trip destination particularly during the winter from December to February when the temperatures remain below freezing at -13 degrees in February, while January has the most snowfall in the year. If you’re lucky you might get to experience 24-hour sunlight during the summer and get to see the Northern Lights/ Aurora Borealis during winter.

The venue for this trip is Rovaniemi’s Santa Park, where Santa and his elves spend their days getting ready for Christmas. The huge underground grotto is made up of fairy-lit walkways, colourful workshops and festive shopping stalls, so there’s lots to explore.

Children can enrol in Elf School, where they’ll learn elf words. They can decorate cookies in Mrs Claus’ kitchen, and take a short train ride through the elves’ headquarters. Another attraction is the Ice Gallery, where the Ice Princess tells tales about the frozen sculptures. The real highlight, though, is meeting Santa in person. Little ones will get a present from him, and you can have a family photo taken.

When you’re ready to play in the snow, you’ll be given all the necessary clothing before taking a short walk through the forest to the outdoor activity area. Then, you’re free to take advantage of everything from husky sleigh rides to snowmobile driving. You’ll meet Santa’s reindeer, and you can warm up with a hot berry juice around an open fire.

Finally, lunch is served in a pretty open-plan restaurant at the heart of the grotto. Time it right and you can watch the elves put on a show while you eat. For a full rundown of what’s in store, take a look at the itinerary. It’s worth noting, the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace, and you can do the activities in whatever order you like.
