Historical Sites

  • Paphos Castle: One of the most visual representations of this city’s incredible history is the iconic Paphos Castle, located right on the edge of the harbour. This formidable fortress dates all the way back to the Byzantine era, and having been destroyed by the earthquake of 1222, was later restored to its founding glory under the Ottomans. The Castle has become an important emblem of the city, and a must view landmark for any visitor!

  • Rock of Aphrodite: Otherwise known as the Petra tou Romiou or the ‘Rock of Rome, this lone sea stack off the coast of the Paphos-Limassol road has been a siren for believers or lovers of mythology for centuries, as the supposed birthplace of Aphrodite. According to the Ancient Greek poet Hesiod, Aphrodite (the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and pleasure) was born from the foam around this rock, which since has become a major attraction in Paphos.

  • Paphos Archaeological Park:

With plenty of ground left to excavate, this park in Paphos has already become one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, for the discovery of an Ancient Greek and Roman City underneath the ground.

The sites and monuments discovered here range in date from the prehistoric to the medieval, and are remarkable well preserved. For instance, the four grand Roman villas previously hidden here have been dated to the 2nd-7th century AD, yet all have practically untouched mosaic floors depicting scenes such as the birth of Dionysos, and a meeting of Apollo and Daphne. The Basilica of Pangala Limeniotissa has been dated as being from the 5th century AD, and is known to have been dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Harbour’.

Perhaps the most exciting find in the Paphos Archaeological Park so far has been the Tomb of Kings. This large, underground cemetery just 2km from the harbour contains elaborately designed tombs dating from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, and is believed to have been the designated burial site of Paphitic aristocrats and other higher-ups in ancient society.
