Spanish Resorts

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Established on 18 October 1997, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was a major addition to the city, as one of the Largest Museums in Spain. The museum was built along the Nervion River, with an excellent view of the mountain ranges nearby. Once opened, the building’s contemporary architecture style received positive reviews from art critics and the public alike for its unique design, which is still a sight to behold to this day!

Today the museum receives millions of visitors every year, vying to see rotating pieces from the Guggenheim’s global, permanent collection, or one of the many large-scale installation pop-ups by contemporary artists. The museum is easily accessible by the Eusko Tran’s Line A, and is a must see for anyone in Bilbao.

Casco Viejo

The Old Town of Bilbao is focused on the original seven streets of the city, Las Siete Calles. This medieval neighbourhood has been remarkably well preserved, while adapted to the new age. Today its tall, colourful buildings and narrow alleyways stuffed with shops and bars have brought a new energy to the city, and have made Casco Viejo a great place to spend the day!

Some of the most popular attractions in the Casco Viejo include the Bilbao Cathedral, Ribera Market, and the Teatro Arriaga. These building have an impressive history, with the Santiago Cathedral dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, the foundation of the city; and the Mercado de la Ribera, where you can buy fresh, local produce, is at 10,000m² the Largest Covered Market in Europe!

Aste Baguisa

Once a year in Bilbao the city is taken over by thousands of revellers celebrating Aste Baguisa (the Great Week). Aste Baguisa is the main festival in Bilbao, and takes place on the first Saturday after the Assumption of Mary on the 15th August.

After the release of the chupinazo (rocket) by the town’s chupinera (Herald), the town is lit up for nine days with fairgrounds, a circus, boxing matches, traditional dances, and nightly firework shows. If ever there was an event that perfectly captured the spirit of the city, it would be this one!
