Alvor is the picture of a traditional Greek village, with its whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets giving way to a gorgeous beach. There are ample recreational spots throughout the city, the most popular of which are listed below.
Framed by the Odiáxere Natural Park and the sandstone cliffs of Prainha, is the glorious Alvor beach. This 3.5km stretch of golden sand offers plenty of room to lie back and relax on one of the many sun loungers available to rent, or for playing games of volleyball, football, or frisbee. The beach’s sand-dune-backed lagoon, and glistening ocean are ideal for a range of water sports, including sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Although there is no physical divide on the strand, Alvor Beach is known as Praia de Alvor to the west, and Praia dos Tres Irmaos (Three Brothers Beach) to the east. Both sides are supervised by a lifeguard during the busy season, and are easily accessible for disabled persons entering from the carpark. The main difference between the two sides is that the eastern end has a series of rock formations, from which the name ‘Three Brothers’ came from, making it the more sheltered side of the strand.
In 2011 a miles long boardwalk was built to cross, without intruding on, some of the most fascinating habitats for wildlife in the Rio de Alvor Nature Reserve. The area covers close to 1500 hectares, and has been granted special environmental and conservation protection.
There are numerous walks of various lengths available along the Alvor beach, the cliffs at Quinta da Rocha, and following the Alvor River, which hosts thousands of migrating birds every Spring and Summer. The estuary of the River Odiaxere is also an excellent bird watching site, and one of the best places to see flamingos!
Established in the 7th century B.C.E., and reconstructed in 1300 C.E., the Castle of Alvor was once a significant military monument, and held an important political and commercial role in the area. In 1755, the Lisbon earthquake completely destroyed the castle, leaving only the remnants of a wall which are visible today.
Inside the castle grounds today there is a modest playground which was built at the end of the 20th century, and some bathroom facilities, making it a nice spot for young families.
