Attractions

  • Surfing

  • Famous for its expansive beaches and year round sunshine, Fuerteventura can pride itself on being the destination of choice for beginner to professional level surfers worldwide. If surfing is one of the activities gathering dust on your bucket list, why not sign up for a lesson in the island’s main surfing town, Corralejo? The expert, multilingual teachers there will take you to beaches across the island to catch the perfect wave. Generally speaking, June to August is the perfect time for anyone to start surfing in Fuerteventura, as the swell will not be at its strongest. October to May meanwhile, has plenty to offer the intermediate to advanced surfers out there to sink their teeth into. Make sure to pop into any one of the many local surf shops around the island for free advice on where the best beach for your skill level is, or try out the following guide:

    • Beginner: Payla Morro (‘Drop Beach’)
    • Intermediate: El Cotillo / Punta Elena (‘Rocky Point’)
    • Advanced: El Hierro (‘The Bubble’)

  • Golfing

  • The tranquil nature of Fuerteventura lends greatly to the calm atmosphere surrounding the island’s multiple golf courses. In Antigua, Fuerteventura Golf Club is home to a gorgeous, ocean-facing, 18 hole course designed by Juan Catarineu. Open all year round, this club offers lessons to suit every age group. Impress your friends by flying home with a diploma after only six hours of lessons! Other well acclaimed clubs on the island include the Golf Club Salinas de Antigua, Jandia Golf Course and Hotel Elba Palace Golf.

  • Parks

  • On the south-east coast of Fuerteventura, one can find the island’s highly praised nature reserve, the Oasis Theme Park. The island of Fuerteventura is a UN Biosphere Reserve, with the entire area classified as protected. The Oasis Theme Park holds a key role in the island’s mission of nature conservation and research. Housing thousands of animals, the park offers educational sessions with parrots, sea lions, birds of prey and more! On site there are three restaurants, a play area, a pet farm, and even Europe’s largest camel reserve. There is a bus service to and from the park that caters to every part of the island.

Shopping

If you plan on indulging in a spot of retail therapy while in Fuerteventura, but are reluctant to miss out on the sun, Centro Comercial Las Palmeras and El Campanario in Corralejo are ideal. Both shopping centres are open roofed with a number of cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops available and the option of taking your food to the outdoor seating area. El Campanario also offers a craft market. Here you can browse local, handmade products while enjoying the live music provided on market days.

For those who would prefer a few hours out of the sun, Las Rotundas in Puerto del Rosario, and Fuerteventura Atlantic Mall in Caleta de Fuste are both indoors and fully air conditioned. Las Rotondas contains three stories of familiar big-brand shops, and the Atlantic Mall has both a cinema and bowling alley for hours of entertainment. Both shopping centres provide free underground parking, and are well connected to all local bus routes.

Cafés & Restaurants

Part of the fun in visiting a new country is in getting a taste of the local cuisine. However, it can often be difficult to know where to start. To help set your holiday off on the right foot, we here at Best4Travel have compiled a list of the top restaurants in Fuerteventura for you, divided by price to cater for all budget types. The majority of cafes and restaurants in Fuerteventura pride themselves on using local suppliers for their ingredients, and are willing to cater to any dietary needs you may have.

  • Low-Cost

  • Fuerteventura is by no means short on places to stop for a relaxing cup of coffee, however El Mentidero Cafe in El Cotillo, and the Citrus Surf Café and An Caisteal Bar & Cafe in Corralejo have consistently received rave reviews from locals and tourists alike.

  • Moderately Priced

  • For a more intimate, evening dining experience, The Ugly Duckling is currently one of the top rated restaurants in Fuerteventura. A Scandinavian and International Bistro, this restaurant is highly in demand all year long and usually requires booking prior to arrival to ensure you can get a table. Other options for a delicious meal at a reasonable price include La Jaira de Demain in Puerto del Rosario and the Ascension in Caleta de Fuste, both of which can provide gluten or nut free dishes on request.

  • Expensive

  • For special occasions in Fuerteventura, you may consider dining at Restaurante Marabu in Esquinzo or Antonia in Triquivijate. Both restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating, with fabulous views of nearby beaches. If you are travelling in group, Restaurante Yamatori, a highly rated sushi restaurant in Corralejo, is furnished with long tables suitable for parties of all sizes.

Nightlife

A night out in Fuerteventura is notable for what can be a sharp contrast between itself and its neighbouring islands. Here you’ll be away from the usual set of tourists associated with the neighbouring island of Lanzarote and Tenerife. If you’re planning the perfect date night, Bungaloo Bar in Corralejo has an outside area fitted with big comfy chairs providing a gorgeous view of when the sun sets over the sea in the evening. If at any point you start to miss home or feel like connecting with the other Irish abroad, McCarthy’s, O’Neill’s and Finnegan's are all Irish bars a short distance away from each other in Corralejo.

If you do fancy having a proper night out, there are some great places to visit on the island. The Kiwi Bar in the Atlantico Centre has a resident DJ that will make sure you stay until the early hours. Wakiki Nightclub on the beach in Corralejo goes until 6 o’clock in the morning!
