Pompeii

Without question, the biggest draw for people to Naples is the city of Pompeii. This ancient Roman city, along with the neighbouring Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae, was forever frozen in time on 24 August AD 79 when it was buried in volcanic ash spewing from an erupting Mount Vesuvius. Thousands of people lost their lives, and their story forgotten, until the city’s rediscovery over a thousand years later.

Nowadays Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, receiving millions of visitors every year. The people, animals, art, and buildings preserved here have given us an incredible window into the past, and has immeasurably deepened our understanding of ancient civilisations.

Pizza

Did you know that pizza was actually invented in Naples? That’s right, the meal synonymous with Italian cuisine (and all that’s good with the world) originated in this stunning, southern town, where its legacy is celebrated every year with a ‘Pizzafest’.

This eleven day festival is a must for any foodie traversing Naples in September, or anyone looking to try a real Neapolitan pizza.
