Attractions

As the third largest island in the Canaries archipelago, Gran Canaria is perfectly formed with its very own assortment of microclimates and a rich variety of landscapes. From wild rugged peaks and deep craggy ravines, to wispy dunes and long sandy beaches, around one-third of the island is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The majority of Gran Canaria's beach resorts can be found along the south coast, with big-hitters like Puerto Rico and Playa del Inglés nudging up against smaller, more boutique resorts like Meloneras and dune-backed Maspalomas. There are fantastic beaches dotted around the island ranging from long, sweeping sandy bays lapped by the sparkling shores of the Atlantic Ocean, to tiny rocky coves offering a quiet secluded spot in blissful surroundings. Other must-visit holiday attractions in Gran Canaria include Palmitos Park near Maspalomas or Tamadaba National Park where one can go for a day of hiking.

Gran Canaria enjoys a rich culture and history, perhaps represented best of all in one of its top attractions; the Cueva Pintada Museum & Archaeological Park. The ‘Painted Cave’ was carved by the ancient Canarii people from volcanic material, and is decorated with prehistoric, geometric patterns across the walls. The cave and museum are located in the heart of town, only 27 km west of Las Palmas, and 50 km away from Gran Canaria Airport. The painted cave is wheelchair friendly, and a perfect day out for all ages. Videos and reconstructions of local life are on view in the museum to show visitors what life was like in Gran Canaria before it was conquered in 1483 by the Crown of Castile, and used as an important step towards the expansion of the Spanish Empire.

For a family day out with a difference, visit Sioux City. Located at Barranco del Aguila in Playa del Aguila, between San Agustin and Bahia Feliz, Sioux City Park is an American Wild West theme park. Allow yourself to become fully immersed walking through the film set left behind from the 1975 western classic "Take a Hard Ride". With plenty of shows including bank robberies, lasso displays, and cancan dancing, there is plenty going on to keep the whole family entertained for the day!

Shopping

Gran Canaria has a wide range of shopping options across all of its island resorts. Whether you’re looking for the perfect souvenir in one of the many traditional shops on the promenades, the best deals on clothes and electronics in one of the island’s renowned hypermarkets, or something special in one of the luxury stores in the upmarket area of Meloneras, Gran Canaria has you covered.

In the bustling island capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria one can find the Centro Comercial Las Arenas, a large shopping mall right beside the beach. In 1999 the building was converted from a traditional bull fighting arena into a mall. The striking exterior from the original arena was left intact, making this shopping centre impossible to miss. With plenty of restaurants and shops to choose from, including the incredibly popular hypermarket Carrefour, this shopping centre is the perfect place to go for a brief break from the sun. Other shopping malls to visit during your stay include Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Ingles, Boulevard El Faro in Meloneras, Centro Comercial El Tableros in San Bartolome de Tirajana, and El Portón in San Agustin.

  • Moderately Priced:
  • To experience Spanish cuisine at its finest, consider spending a romantic evening at Let Me Take U in Tejeda. This contemporary venue is currently the top rated restaurant in Gran Canaria. • Expensive:
  • A trip to Gran Canaria would not be complete without first sampling European, Mediterranean, and Spanish food the way it was meant to be eaten. To this end, please look into the top three rated, higher-end restaurants in Gran Canaria are Los Guayres in Puerto de Mogán, Restaurante Gorbea in San Agustin, and Restaurante Calma Chicha in Playa del Ingles.
