The Leaning Tower of Pisa

As the Colosseum is to Rome, and Pompeii is to Naples, the Leaning Tower is essential viewing for anyone passing through Pisa. This lopsided campanile is known universally, and is one of the first images that come to mind when one thinks of Italy.

The tower is located in the city’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), behind Pisa Cathedral and the Baptistery of St. John. Between 1173-1372, it was built up from a poor foundation, with the ground considerably softer on one side. As the tower grew taller, it began to lean to one side and eventually became 5.5 degrees off its axis. With concerns that the tower might one day fall, it was stabilized in the late 20th/early 21st centuries, and is now set at an angle of 4 degrees.
