Top Attractions

  • Cape St. Vincent: This particular headland in Sagres is the most south-westerly point of Portugal, and offers incredible views of the ocean (and the sheer drop below!). The Lighthouse of Cabo de Sao Vicente was first constructed in 1500, and has been lit since the 19th century.

  • Sagres Fortress: Legend says that Prince Henry the Navigator, the patron of Portuguese exploration, established a navigation school here at the Sagres Fortress. This large site has plenty of historical features, including a cistern tower, the 16th century Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, a 17th century altarpiece, and the Rosa dos Ventos, a giant stone pattern believed to have been used as a compass and sundial.

  • Praia do Beliche: Backed by 40m high cliffs, and facing the mighty Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve. The Praia do Beliche is an exciting place to visit, with its strong swell known to professional surfers across Portugal. A lifeguard supervises the beach over the summer, though it is important to note that swimming or surfing in these waters is not advised unless you are a confident swimmer.
