Top Croatia Resorts

Attractions

  • Stari Grad
  • The Stari Grad (Old Town) of Hvar is also the oldest town in all of Croatia! The area is said to have been settled by the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC, and their influence can still be seen in the layout of the vineyards, olive groves, fields of lavender, and pine forests that surround the city today.

A big draw for people to Stari Grad is this feeling of a connection to the past. Whether you’re walking through the fields or the winding streets, it’s easy to see yourself in a time gone by. The old stone houses found throughout the city still show the personalities of their original inhabitants. A perfect example of this is beautiful Tvrdalj Castle.

The castle was once the home of a local nobleman and poet Petar Hektorović, who in the 16th century fortified the residence in order to protect himself and the townspeople from the invading Ottoman Turks. Indeed, you can still find various inscriptions on the walls of the castles today that say in Croatian and Latin, “Petar Hektorović, son of Marin, built this at his own expense and by his own efforts, for his own and his friends’ use”.

  • Pakleni Islands
  • While in Hvar you may spot the white sands of the Pakleni (Paklinski) Islands, just off the south west coast, beckoning to you across the waves. These 16 islands cover only 7km² between them, and make for a perfect day trip away from the mainland!

Small boats leave Hvar bay at regular intervals throughout the day, and will weave around the islands so you don’t miss the handful of small huts on Gališnik, or the lone lighthouse on Pokonji Dol. Once off the boat, you can dive, fish, swim, and snorkel to your heart’s content, with the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic letting you see all that lies on the seabed below.
