  • The Citadel
  • The magnificent citadel in the heart of Carcassonne, also known as the Cité de Carcassonne, is the largest walled city in Europe with its defensive wall still intact. This medieval fortress dates back to the Gallo-Roman period, in the 5th century BC, and has made the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

If this city seems familiar to you, it may be because you have see or played the popular game of the same name, Carcassonne! Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, the Carcassonne board game was inspired by the medieval landscape of the town, and has become one of the top rated strategy games of the 21st century.

Another reason why you may recognise the city is if you ever saw the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. This incredibly popular movie was shot in and around this fortified city!

  • Pont Marengo Bridge
  • Crossing the Canal du Midi, the Pont Marengo Bridge not only provides access to the railway station of Carcassonne, but is also as a gorgeous attraction to Carcassonne in its own right.

The bridge stretches over the Lac de la Cavayère, which was made to compliment the green fields in the area and act as a recreational spot just outside the city centre. From here, you can watch canal boats drift lazily by, or simply take a moment to take in the beauty of your surroundings.

As simple as it may first appear, the Pont Marengo invokes quite a sense of local history upon closer inspection. It was named in memory of the Battle of Marengo at which Napoleon defeated the Austrians in 1800, and just down from the bridge is a modest garden and plaque dedicated to the members of the Maquis (French Resistance) who were executed here by the Nazis in World War II.
