A trip to Bastille is often the top suggestion for things to do in Grenoble, for sometimes no reason other than to experience the Grenoble-Bastille cable car! The cable cars are known to the locals as ‘les bulles’ (the bubbles) for their circular shape, and they offer an unparalleled, panoramic view of the city below.
La Bastille is not to be confused with the former Bastille prison in Paris, which was famously destroyed during the French Revolution. This Bastille is actually a series of ancient fortifications on top of Grenoble’s surrounding Chartreuse mountain range.
At the top of the hill your will find two restaurants, the Bastille Arts Centre, and the highly regarded Musée des Troupes de Montagne.
In the heart of Grenoble, the Palace of the Parliament of Dauphiné is a striking reminder of the town’s impressive Renaissance period. The palace was built in 1500, and would house the parliament of Dauphiné until its dissolution during the French Revolution (1789-1799).
Following this, the palace was used as the main courthouse of Grenoble until 2002. The building now belongs to the Isère Council, and is currently under renovation, though a tour of the palace can b organised by the Grenoble visitor centre.
The Museum of Grenoble holds a special place in the history of art in France, as it was the first museum in the country to accept modern art into its collection! Today, this collection includes work by Rubens, Renoir, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Joan Miró and Andy Warhol.
As the most popular museum in Grenoble, the museum receives over 200,000 visitors every year. Its doors are open everyday except Tuesdays, and offers free admission to those under 18 and a reduced fee for large families and the elderly.
