Attractions

  • Submarine Base
  • La Rochelle was an important strategic location for the Nazis during World War II, and as such was the last French city to be liberated. The Nazis held their naval base at La Pallice (La Rochelle’s main port), where the U-boat pens used then are still in the harbour today.

The use of La Rochelle by the Germans at this time was brought to the big screen twice in 1981, first in the German war film Das Boot, based on the best selling German fiction work of the same name, and second in the U-boat scenes of Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark!

  • Maritime Museum of La Rochelle
  • With such a fascinating naval history, it’s really no surprise that La Rochelle has a fantastic maritime museum! The museum actually covers three boats docked in Place Bernard Moitessier, and includes displays on the area’s fishing, trade, and occupied history.

The three ships used to hold the museum’s collections are actually historic in their own right! The France I was used as a meteorological ship in 1958, the Angoumois was an old fishing trawler, and the Saint-Gilles tugboat was the last boat in France to use a reversible engine. The museum also holds the Calypso, a ship used by the famed oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau as a mobile laboratory.
