Of all the beaches in Gran Canaria, Las Canteras is the biggest by far. At 3100m² there is plenty of room to stretch out in the sun, with rows of sun loungers available to rent. The water here is perfect for families with young children, as further out from the shore a natural barrier of coral sandstone breaks the strong Atlantic waves. Playa del Confital, a natural extension of Las Canteras, is a particularly popular spot for swimming.
Staying active while on holiday is made fun with all of the incredible sports on offer in Las Alcaravaneras! Simply stop by the local yacht club, or talk to instructors on the beach, and you can join in on the brilliant sailing and canoeing activities just off the shore. For the landlubbers among us, Las Alcaravaneras also has both indoor and outdoor courts for volleyball and soccer.
The fine grey sand of La Laja isn’t the beach’s only striking feature, as the strong waves from the Atlantic crashing into its shore have caught the attention of amateur and professional surfers worldwide. La Laja is also the starting point for local boat races every weekend, proving plenty of entertainment for anyone passing by.
In a bustling capital such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, you can be sure that there will always be some great places to shop. In this case, the Centro Comercial Las Arenas, a large shopping mall right beside the beach with plenty of restaurants and shops to choose from (including the incredibly popular hypermarket Carrefour), is the perfect place to go for a brief break from the sun. In 1999 the building was converted from a traditional bull fighting arena into a mall. The striking exterior from the original arena was left intact, making this shopping centre impossible to miss!
To help set your holiday off on the right foot, we here at Best4Travel have compiled a list of the top cafés and restaurants in and around Las Palmas, divided by price to cater for all budget types.
