A great example of how Malta has in general embraced the historical features of its country while still bringing in the new is the development of Qawra Tower. Originally built sometime around 1638 by the Order of St. John to serve as a small watchtower, an artillery battery was added as an extra defense around the tower in 1715.
Today, Qawra Tower is not only a great historical attraction to the town, but the tower and battery have also been developed into a restaurant! With incredible views of Malta’s northern coastline, this is sure to be one of the most interesting places you’ll eat on the island.
Without doubt, one of the highlights of any trip to Malta is the Mediterranean Sea. Between days spent lounging on the beach, playing in the water, going on ferry rides, or simply taking in the view from your hotel or apartment, the Mediterranean will surely feature in your memories of the island.
It’s no wonder then that so many visitors are drawn to Malta’s National Aquarium! Here you can learn more about the local marine wildlife, take a walk through a tunnel with sharks swimming above your head, feed the fish, and listen in on talks from experts in marine conservation.
A major plus for any car fanatic visiting the island is the Malta Classic Car Museum on the main tourist street in Qawra. Here you will find a treasure trove of classic cars and motorcycles, hailing from the 1940’s up to the 1970’s! With over 100 exhibits on show, the museum promises to show everything from “T-Birds to Spitfires and Fiats to Fords”. All of the cars in the museum are kept in pristine condition, in thanks to the large workshop where cars cans be restored on site.
The museum is open every Monday to Friday from 9.00 - 18.00, and on Saturday from 9.00 - 13.00. With its imaginative layout and displays and fantastic collection, a trip here will be the perfect gift for any car fam in the party!
