The rocky coastline on the northside of Sliema is almost always abuzz with people, sunbathing and swimming from the crack of dawn! There are a number of water sports centres across the city, where one can learn how to jet-ski, scuba dive, surf, or go flyboarding. What better way to cool down than in the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean?
If you want to see more of Sliema than you can from the shore, why not set sail on a harbour cruise? Tours can last between 1-2 hours, departing from the south coast of Sliema (‘The Ferries’) and travelling around the peninsula. This can be the perfect way to shake up your day, and add a touch of excitement to your holiday!
While Sliema, and Malta as a whole, has inevitably changed over time with the addition of hotels and tourist centres, one can still find evidence of the country’s fascinating past at every turn. Nowhere is this clearer than at any one of the coastal fortifications built by the Order of St. John in the 17th and 18th centuries.
On Tigné Point in Sliema you will find Forte Tigné, one of the oldest polygonal forts in the world! This design was revolutionary in the 18th century as it provided a better defence against explosive shells. The fort was built between 1793 and 1795 to face the threat of a French invasion of Malta. This did eventually come to pass, three years later in 1798. As one of the rare few points of resistance in the country, the fort held out for three days before the Order’s surrender.
Shortly after this, Fort Tigné was taken over by the British military who made a number of additions to the building. The fort remained garrisoned until 1979 when the British withdrew from Malta. Today, it is still a point of interest for tourists and locals alike, with plans to one day convert it into a museum.
