Built in 1571, the Grandmaster’s Palace has been a centre for Malta’s administrative powers since its inception as a seat for the Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta, later as the house for the Maltese parliament, and today as the office of the President of Malta.
The first floor of the palace is left open to the public from Monday to Sunday, as long as there are no state functions underway. This floor covers the State Dining Room, Supreme Council Hall, Ambassador’s Hall, and the Council Chamber where one can view the rare Gobelin tapestries hanging there.
Another exciting feature of the palace is the Palace Armoury. Here you can see weapons used by the Ottomans during the Great Siege of 1565, as well as parade armour worn by the Knights of Malta.
Located in the centre of Valletta, Saint John’s co-cathedral, with its truly opulent interior, is an excellent example of Baroque architecture. The cathedral was built by the Order of St. John between 1572 and 1577, whose presence can still be felt there today. For instance, underneath the cathedral’s gorgeous marble floors are tombs holding bodies of over 400 knights and officers of the order!
Saint John’s is made all the more impressive with its collection of artwork, including the masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist (1608), by the famous Italian artist Caravaggio. The ceiling is adorned with paintings of scenes from the life of Saint John, framed by elaborate stone carvings. For any fan of history, art, or luxury, a trip to the cathedral is a must!
