A little known fact about Sicily is that it actually has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Italy per region! Palermo in particular has a wonderful range of attractions, complimented by the Palermo Archaeological Museum where you can learn even more about the area!
Having acted as the seat of the Kings of Sicily under Norman rule in the 11th century, the Palazzo Reale is the oldest royal residence in Europe. This gorgeous palace now holds the Sicilian Regional Assembly, and its royal apartments and chapel (the Cappella Palatina) are open to the public.
The construction of this cathedral covered six centuries, making it rather unique for the sheer variety of architectural styles it has! The church’s features range from Moorish, Norman, Baroque, Gothic and Neo-Classical.
The Church of San Cataldo, erected in 1154, is an excellent example of the Arab-Norman architectural style typical of Sicily. The original altar and mosaiced floors have survived the years remarkably well, as have the remains of Palermo’s Old City Wall which can be seen running underneath the church
Established in the 6th century, the ‘St. John of the Hermits’ church is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Palermo! The red domes on top of the church’s roof and bell tower are a clear sign of its Arabian influences.
Also known as the Martorana, St. Mary’s Cathedral holds a prime position in the historic Piazza Bellini in Palermo. Famed for its stunning interior, the cathedral is visited thousands of times a year by people hoping to see the gorgeous ‘Christ in the Dome’ mosaic.
Originally a summer residence of the Norman kings of Sicily, the Zisa Palace today is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Palermo. Behind the building’s stone exterior is an incredible mural and fountain, within a golden niche, in the main hall.
The ‘Admiral’s Bridge’ on the original site of Palermo’s Oreto River, was built in 1131 by the admiral of King Roger II of Sicily. The bridge’s iconic twelves arches have become a recognisable symbol for Palermo itself, and today cover a small garden of succulent plants.
