Built between 1394 and 1465, the Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa Maria is the crown jewel of Murcia’s main square. The cathedral was built by James I the Conqueror, King of Aragorn, over the former Great Mosque of Aljamiá.
While the facade of the church is in keeping with the town’s Baroque aesthetic, the interior has distinctly gothic features. Interestingly enough, the heart and entrails of King Alfonso X the Wise (1221-1284) are actually buried under the main altar! Alfonso had bestowed his remains to the city as proof of his love of Murcia, and to thank the city for its fidelity to him.
Another notable feature of the Murcia Cathedral is its belltower. The tower was constructed between 1521 and 1791, and fitted with 25 bells from the 17th and 18th centuries. At 90 metres tall it is the tallest campanile in Spain!
